2017 is set to be a big year for The xx with the latest album ‘I See You’ due for release later this month, and so far the band has demonstrated a return to their stylistic and smooth approach. However, from their latest releases it appears the dark, sombre undertones have taken a backseat for more pop infused levels that gradually build.

Nevertheless, the releases still undeniably shimmers of The xx with thought provoking lyrics and a distinctive uniqueness they bring with every track.

Their latest release, ‘Say Something Loving’, is dripping with emotion and feeling – largely due to the marrying of Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim’s vocals creating perfect harmonies as they release their insecurities.

The 80’s inspired echoing guitar hooks and repetitive percussion beats demonstrates a slight shift from the bands previous work with Coexist and the throwback style is reinforced with the sample of the 1978 track ‘Do You Feel It’ by the Alessi Brothers.

The band are known for their maturity and seriousness despite their youth, and ‘Say Something Loving’ is no exception demonstrating their ability to tackle problems in a way conventional pop acts wouldn’t dare to.

It’s still mellow and tranquil enough to be undeniably The xx, and allows plenty of time for reflecting about past lovers and uncertainties yet there is definitely a switch up to the classic formula.

Whilst still being serious and solemn the music itself is more energetic and lively than a lot of the bands previous work, however, it still maintains the significance of the lyrics and they appear to remain the focal point.

The XX are producing and releasing some of their best music and the forthcoming album will certainly set the precedent for what the future holds for the band and how their musical style will further develop.
