Twin Peaks – ‘Shake Your Lonely / Sun and the Trees’

Here to rival David Lynch’s Twin Peaks revival, the Chicago-based indie band of the same name have some new releases out in the form of ‘Shake Your Lonely’ and ‘Sun and the Trees’.

The two tracks are the second instalment of the band’s ‘Sweet’17 Singles’: a subscription series releasing two new tracks at the start of every month from July until December, culminating in twelve new songs by the end of the year.

The ‘Sweet’17 Singles’ series was offered as a limited subscription to receive a two 7″ tracks every month, with the songs being simultaneously available as a digital release. The series started with the singles ‘Tossing Tears’ and ‘Under the Pines’ in July, and August has seen the release of A-side ‘Shake Your Lonely’ and B-side ‘Sun and the Trees’.

In a statement, the band addressed that, with their demanding touring schedule, the best way to release new music ‘without having to carve out the time to record a full length LP’ would be ‘to track whenever we could find the time, and release the music in a series of singles’.

All four of the singles so far have a different feel and sound: the band clarified that ‘this structure also allowed us the opportunity to experiment without a focus on creating a cohesive body of work’. ‘Shake Your Lonely’ is an addictive cyclical, folk rock track with a familiar sound and a comforting feel.

It’s somewhere between a Mac Demarco track, and a Trudy and the Romance beat. ‘Sun and the Trees’ is a more blurry, dreamy and slow-paced track that compliments its partner. It almost has an alt-80s sound, a low-key background track.

With no fears about experimenting and finding new sounds, it will be exciting to hear how different the next two songs Twin Peaks release next month.
