EP Review: No Hot Ashes – Skint Kids Disco

No Hot Ashes

The long wait is over as No Hot Ashes release their new EP, Skint Kids Disco via Modern Sky.

The Stockport quartet howl from their soapbox on this empowering and relatable new release as they prepare for a busy three months.

Title-track ‘Skint Kids Disco’ is an anthem custom-made to power the listener on into the early hours. Flaunting the band’s mutual love of 70s and 80s funk and disco records. The track is a complex concoction of pepped-up percussion, catch-fire chord changes and booty-shaking basslines.

The EP also features previous single ‘Eight Till Late’ and is inspired by the band members mutual love of 70s & 80s funk & disco, this is shown by the intoxicatingly funky bassline that carries the song. The distinctive vocals of Isaac Taylor just float nicely to create a really well-rounded tune.

New track, ‘Bad Crowd’ is a rallying cry for the young generation of today. It’s an anti-anthem that sticks two fingers up to the so called ‘chavs’ of society and all their fake ASBO-associations of what it is to be young and working class in the 21st Century.

Pillowy bass lines plunge and squalling elastic strings snap and tear across this gnarly groove-ridden grinder of a track. The band never sounding more focused in their vision to break free from the norm and talk about their experiences through music.

Speaking about the track, frontman Isaac Taylor says: “’Bad Crowd’ allowed us as a band to experiment using different instrumentation and that was a lot of fun in the studio.

“The strings and tempo of the song add a slice of something new to the No Hot Ashes discography; it’s our disco-funk ballad.

“The lyrics explore being poor, feeling unmotivated and embodying the “bad crowd” your mother warned you about.”

The EP was recorded and mixed at the new Magic Garden studios in Wolverhampton with help from producer and sonic wizard, Gavin Monaghan (The Sherlocks, Jaws, Robert Plant).
