Newly formed Liverpudlian Post-Punk duo ‘So, Reverie’ have released their second deeply personal second single ‘Sentimentality’.
After their old band ‘Avalyn’ finished, Andy Power (vocals and guitar) former band member of SPINN) and Cain Garcia (guitars and drums) had a meeting of minds. They decided to reunite over their mutual love for alternative guitar music and dissatisfaction with the current music scene. Along came ‘So, Reverie’, a duo born of synergy, with a point to prove.
And having just recently sold out their first ever headline hometown show at The Kazimier Stockroom, they’re already making big wave.
To my ears, ‘So, Reverie’ exist in the “in between”. Yeah, that’s a headscratcher… let me explain… Their music is smooth yet abrasive, melancholic yet hopeful, and accessible yet deep. Basically, their songs are packed with more than meets the eye.
‘Sentimentality’ is a deeply personal song to Power, written about the harsh realities of losing someone you love. On the song, Power says: “’Sentimentality’ is very close to my heart. I instrumentally wanted to create a melancholic and upbeat song with the guitars which inspired me to write the lyrics in the way in which I did.”
‘Sentimentality’ is bursting at the seams with guitars, there’re jangly tones, sticky indie licks, and gorgeous waves of reverb. As a guitarist myself, it put a big smile on my face. Whilst the guitars are front and centre, they never feel forced, they’re mixed perfectly, leaving plenty of background space for Garcia to thrash away on the kit. It’s like you’re taking the silkiness of Echo & the Bunnymen and adding a dirty dash of DIIV, as I said, smooth yet abrasive.
But rule 101 of writing a solid tune, make sure you’ve got a great chorus to work with, and that’s where ‘Sentimentality’ excels. Because for all the great guitars and drums in the world, it’s nothing without a solid chorus. ‘Sentimentality’ has a great chorus, and by the time Power affably croons “…to the dreams we used to have” you know you won’t be shaking it off anytime soon.
‘So, Reverie’ have landed on an interesting sound with their latest single, which feels familiar but ever so slightly wonky. I respect that the band have taken the time to subtly finesse and personalise a well-worn Dream/Jangle Pop sound. So watch this space, because ‘So Reverie’ are gearing up to take over Liverpool and every other city if ‘Sentimentality’ is anything to go off.
