As a fan of Ben Wheatley’s most recent film ‘High Rise’, it was intriguing to see what his next feature would be like. ‘Free Fire’ is mostly set in abandoned warehouse in the late 70’s. The viewer could be could be unsure if they would want the scene to change for variation or for it to be set over a few days. However, it’s great to see an interesting scene almost like a video game. Wheatley even designed the set on Mine Craft and you can tell that every turn and curve has been created from his design, which works effectively. It was enjoyable to see that rapid shooter style on film.
The film is essentially a dark comedy that’s packed with mystery, character study and plenty of gore, swearing and violence. It was because of this style some people might be unsure if they would enjoy this film. Luckily I did. It’s interesting that this film was made on a relatively small budget as you couldn’t tell because of explosions, special effects and constant gun fire.
Upcoming actors lead and impress making you want to look up more of their work. It was great to see them on the big screen – Brie Larson was very impressive playing her part to perfection. It was awesome to see her in an action role ready for playing Captain Marvel which I’m sure she’ll be amazing in.
One of the standout characters is the legendary ‘Vernon’ and I feel this is a role Sharlto Copley was born to play. Fans will still be quoting the lovable phrase “Vern” with his brilliant one liners in years to come from the film and he does bring a dark humour to the film – as do all the cast. This is important part as the film needs a lighter side as it’s very gory and brutal, which can be hard to watch at times.
Although the excellent script delivers an unexpectedly a comical aspect to a film like this, there is so much gun fire, swearing and madness that you can’t keep track what happening to some of the small members of cast who do look similar. It can be a confusing watch sometimes. You often wondered who shot who as it’s so fast paced.
The end was satisfying and enjoyable as a viewer. Overall a good absorbing watch and this action-comedy which isn’t over complicated, blasts at the short 90 minute slot with ease. I give this film 8 out of 10!
