Darlia explore new frontiers with ‘Beam Me Up’

Darlia

So, if you haven’t heard by now, Darlia are back. They’re riffing on a spacey, alieny theme at the moment, too. It’s all good.

But if Darlia are back doesn’t mean anything to you? Luckily for you, they’ve just brought a new single out in ‘Beam Me Up’ that looks to abduct you right into their world.

Now, one thing that still looms large, and somewhat adds a sense of mystery to the Blackpool troupe, is that we’re yet to really know quite what went on with these guys between the early 2015 release of ‘Petals’ and their much-awaited return to earth at the end of last year.

Well, that is, other that time they went viral for dubbing Devvo over a video of an angry goat.

It makes it all the more interesting a listening exercise, then, when you notice just how much their new single ‘Beam Me Up’ carries the sound of a band that has musically matured.

Grown more sophisticated, one could even say, judging from somewhat dark piano chimes we are treated to in the opening few seconds, and the emphasis on a clearer sound throughout the track that marks a definitive departure from their more lo-fi efforts in the past.

And yet, there’s enough for them remain unmistakable here as the band that gleefully pushed the Seattle sound into the British indie mould a few years back.

Perhaps that’s because, as he often does, frontman Nathan Day bears his soul lyrically on this track, seemingly lamenting his lack of understanding of the anguish that befalls him, and likens himself to a ‘broken doll’.

But it’s emotional songwriting that is tastefully done, not mawkish, and compliments the increasingly layered sound we have been beginning to hear from this quartet. It is, in all, a far more detailed and obviously pored over piece of music than we have been used to hearing from the lads, and that isn’t to say at all that their older stuff didn’t pack some absolute punches too.

What to say in short about ‘Beam Me Up’ then? Well, without trying to reel through another one of those platitudes you often see on music blogs, Darlia really do show another side to themselves on this new material, and it’s a very healthy thing to hear.

A stellar effort, you could say.
