By The Academic are an Irish indie band from Mullingar who are tipped to be a force to be reckoned with in 2018. Forming in secondary school in 2013 through a love of music, toasted sandwiches, and Nicholas Cage films, the band consists of Craig Fitzgerald on lead vocals and guitar, Matt Murtagh on guitar, Stephen Murtagh on bass, and Dean Gavin on drums.
They play anthemic indie rock influenced by The Killers, The Kooks, and Kings of Leon. It reflects their youthful spirit and ambitious nature, matched by lyrics that tell stories from a personal perspective about relationships, dreaming of better things, and the pains of growing up. They write massive choruses that’ll get firmly planted in your head, for example on breakthrough single ‘Bear Claws’.
The band have grafted over the last four years; going from playing in small pubs and clubs in their hometown to sold-out shows in Ireland and the UK along with support slots for Twenty One Pilots and Catfish & The Bottlemen.
The Academic will release their eagerly anticipated debut album, ‘Tales From The Backseat’ on 12th January. It features ten stunning tracks of carefree enthusiasm and an infectious upbeat energy. To support the album, they are touring the UK and Europe in April, which is sure to broaden their appeal.
The Academic are going to smash 2018 because they write anthems that shoot towards the heights of stadiums, striking a relatable chord with new listeners, showing they’ll create a big impact over the next year.
