‘No Way’ – the latest single from Brighton-based alt-rockers Howland (Tyler Adams vocals/guitar, Lee Vincent guitar, Jake Saunders drums) – comes hot on the heels of what can safely be described as an eventful year for the band.
Having endured the torment of having their guitars stolen after a gig last October, the last twelve months have, on the brighter side, also seen them support the likes of High Tyde and Clean Cut Kid, and solidify their lineup after some early changes.
That being said, a listen to ‘No Way’ suggests their sights are very firmly set on what lies ahead. Introducing itself in a stripped-back, almost balladic fashion, the track quickly ramps up into the wall of sound these lads have done a fine job at making a name for themselves with.
While still demonstrably the work of a band in its nascency – the vocals do in places seem somewhat strained, though in most part by design – the knack Howland have for a good power-chorus makes a good show of itself here, helped considerably by Jake Saunders’ unremitting drumbeat.
The trio head out on a UK tour in February (you can find all their dates here) , and ‘No Way’ is available now via Spotify. On the evidence of what’s on display here alone, they’re certainly deserving of a closer look.
