London-based music collaborative project Seafarers release new album Another State, filled with dreamy storytelling.
Another State, released yesterday (October 4th) is the band’s third album which takes the band back to stories from their childhood opening up with the line ‘hey kid, don’t sweat it, I’ve been wetting the bedsheets all my life’ on single ‘Bedwetters’.
Ten songs of chamber-pop; music that combines rock music with the intricate use of strings, horns, piano, and vocal harmonies, serve as story-like vignettes, detailing people in transit.
Jazz musician Matthew Herd and Irish singer Lauren Kinsella front out the band with their musical talent and soft vocals. Track three ‘Televangelists’ offers an existential take on religion and technology, whilst ‘Melissa’ is a childhood friend who got lost along the way. ‘Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You)’ throws us into the magnetic forcefield of a destructive relationship featuring an incredible etheral jazz solo.
The melodic ‘Anyone Else’ and ‘Tiny Itch’ offer a more poetic journey, while ‘Tough Kids’ and ‘A Little Loss’ bring the album to a bittersweet, emotionally resonant conclusion by allowing the piano to take center stage.
Another State as a whole is a wonderful combination of jazz, indie and folk and they take you on a journey through intricate storytelling. Seafarers use characters who leave home and venture into the big wide world and find themselves lost in the abyss in search of something to hold onto.
Starting their musical adventure in 2020 with debut albnum ‘Orlando’ and its follow up ‘II’ in 2022, Seafarers have produced a storytelling wonder, firmly establishing the band as one of the most innovative and captivating forces in the chamber-pop scene today. While it’s easy on the ears, the more closely you listen, the more layers you’ll discover.
