Indie rock band from Minnesota, Hippo Campus, stopped off in Nottingham during their UK tour which celebrates the release of their newest album ‘Landmark’.  Crowds of eager fans gathered at the door of the venue long before doors opened, showing just how popular the band has become in the UK.

Support was provided in the form of ‘Toothless’, a London– based band created by Bombay Bicycle Club bassist Ed Nash. Whilst still strongly associated with his former band, Toothless has a completely different sound. Nash is the lead singer within the band however a powerful, operatic almost, backing vocal performance is provided by Rosa Brooke who also played the keyboard. Nash and his band were clearly seasoned performers, knowing exactly how to warm the crowd with a near faultless performance.

More and more people packed into the room before the main act hit the stage, kicking off the show with a performance of “Little Grace”. This cheery tune certainly got the party started as the crowd all sang along and danced along. This sense of being carefree filled the room and everybody acted as though they were the only people present. It was unlike any gig I have ever attended, there was very little pushing and shoving, just a room full of people who were there to enjoy themselves.

The band’s strong stage presence created an electric atmosphere, especially through the more upbeat songs such as “Baseball”. The band were full of energy, constantly moving around the stage so each and every member of the crowd had were able to have a good view of the performance. It was clear that the band were really enjoying being able to put on a show for us all which made the songs all the more uplifting.

The band returned for an encore, performing “Violet” which was quite possibly the most popular song of the night and so a perfect way to end their set. They had performed for around an hour and a half at this point and yet were still as dynamic as they were when they began. The audience roared with approval as the band exited the staged for a well-deserved rest.

The band have almost completed their tour of the UK however, they are due to return to their home country to complete a tour of the US, beginning at the end of October.
