Although Ulysses Wells started releasing material this year, he has been getting a lot of support from high places. His soulful voice and raw blues sound have attracted the attention of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, who’s played him on his Beats 1 show, and has been featured in The Line of Best Fit. He recently released his new track, ‘Ask Ya Momma’, a confident blues number which will surely increase his profile.
The track opens with an addictive Jack White-esque riff, before Wells’ unique voice kicks in. Wells’ coolness dominates proceedings, his sassy vocals meshing well with the stomping drums and dirty guitars. The track itself is about rage caused by betrayal and regret bottled up inside. The protagonist wishes that he could ask his mum to help out and “separate the good from the bad”, Wells laying his feelings bare with honest conviction. The listener can feel the frustration in the relatable lyrics and vulnerability in his voice. It’s this realism that will set him on his way to bigger things.
Wells has also gained recognition through being heard on both Sky Sports and Radio X, so you can expect him to reach a wider audience in the near future.
