Forget going large, forget going big, Declan McKenna is going ‘Humongous’ with his latest single on his upcoming debut album ‘What Do You Think About The Car?’ set for release on July 21st via Columbia.
‘Humongous’ memorialises childhood times, an ode to the adventures we made and played out as children. “I’m big, humongous, enormous and small and it’s not fair,” he sings in the distinguishing sound of 80’s synth as he shreds through chords on his electric guitar. “That I am nothing and nobody’s there. Do you care?”
The lyrics also talk about being made to feel like nothing, frowned upon, and most of all not getting a voice in society; something many people, not just his fans, can relate to.
Such a talent at such a young age he doesn’t broadcast his tales of teenage heartbreak, it’s taboo subjects in society. Declan states the inspiration behind his new single: “This was the last song I wrote for the record. Not to pick a favourite child, but I think this might be a step in the direction I’m heading in: I love big powerful choruses that you can just scream, and I wanted this to be one of those.”
McKenna has matured from his humble beginnings of winning a Glastonbury competition to play a set. Not only will he be there this year for the festival, he will be there with a plethora of catchy tunes, with a new album on the way. If you’re looking for your new favourite artist, then Declan McKenna is for you.
