Two weeks ago today saw the release of Cage The Elephant’s new banger, ‘Whole Wide World’, and let me tell you it did not disappoint.
If you can imagine a Jake Bugg – Foster The People hybrid, that’s probably the twist that I can’t quite put my finger on accompanying the classic sound of Cage The Elephant; ‘Whole Wide World’ entertains a basic song idea taken to a new level with story-telling lyrics and energetic instrumental aspects.
As the track develops, the repeated title of the song within the tune creates an anthemic vibe, the repetition enhancing the positivity radiating from the sublime symphony as the imagery depicted within the verses paints a picture of relaxation and tranquility. During the build up towards the climatic elements of the track, strings engage with the otherwise solid drum beat and chords to enthuse the sense of optimism carried throughout.
The song maintains an intricate story, somewhat similar to previous tracks such as ‘Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked’, proving that although their newer music will have an original and distinguishable flair, it still maintains the immediately recognisable tinge that proves unique to this band. This ability to mix and match tones proves their diversity as artists, building evermore excitement towards their new material.
Although we haven’t heard a peep from the band in terms of mentioning any sort of tour or gigs to celebrate the upcoming album as of yet, they are surely to be expected. The band have some gigs abroad and a few scattered around September, but an album tour hasn’t been announced. After playing Reading and Leeds festival back in 2016, it’s safe to anticipate some substantial gigs somewhere in the near future.
