The Lowtones deliver 80s punk-infused alternative and dark wave rock

With their debut EP The Lowtones, from Norwich, are ready to take the rest of the country by storm.

“The Lowtones have a very authentic 80’s British post-punk sound that fits very well with our roster of artists.” – Meritorio Records (Madrid, Spain)

The band is made up of  Oli ‘Mav’ Mavilio (Vocals), Jack Abbott (Guitar), Tim Cary (Bass) and George Abbott (Drums).  Forming at the start of 2020, Jack and George who are brothers attended school with Mav before meeting Tim playing football. From that The Lowtones began.

Their sound has an alternative rock feel with hints of new and dark wave with influence from great bands of the 80’s. These include, The Cure, Joy Division and The Smiths .

With the band’s beginning being hit by lockdown measures their debut EP is also completely self-produced. They have managed to get such a rich and high quality recording themselves proving they know their craft well.

On writing and recording the EP, the band said: “We recorded and mixed the album ourselves at our houses with the fairly basic set-up – a mic, laptop, and Logic. The most notable thing about the band has been the momentum and pace at which we’ve written and recorded the songs.

“Self-producing Lights Out meant that we were able to keep up that sense of urgency, which I think is captured in the recording.”

Due to the lockdown, The Lowtones haven’t been able to do any of their gigs or live performances. They have however record an interview with BBC Norwich about the EP, which is notable.

We can’t wait to see what is to come when gigs are back in full swing!

‘You would never set out to write and record an EP/Album like this, but it has worked out really well for us. The DIY spirit and pace with which it was all done was really exciting and I think that energy comes through in the music.”

With a drumbeat that makes you subconsciously start toe tapping and dancing along you can picture the EP being played live really clearly. When listening you can picture the venue, people stood in the crowd, pints in hand, having a great time which is a situation completely outside of what inspired these tracks.

“Musically, we were (at least partly) inspired by the time. There is a lot of anxiety and uncertainty out there at the moment and we have sought to capture that in our sound.,” added the band. “There isn’t any sort of specific context or set way it should be listened to.

“There are a lot of themes in the lyrics about isolation and loneliness, difficult break-ups and unrequited love which lots of people will be able to relate to on some level. But the music is also pretty up-beat and catchy so you can just as easily dance to it.”

It’s safe to say that the EP does just that when it comes to the catchiness and the songs being easy to dance too! One song especially is ‘Let Go’ which I’m bopping away to as I write this.

“Lights Out was purely a way to express the feeling I had after experiencing heartbreak, and then subsequently the fear and anxiety of being back out on the scene alone. The lows that I’ve encountered in the pursuit of new love, where nothing compares but the bridge is burnt.”

It makes us excited to see what is to come from The Lowtones, especially when live music is back in full swing.
