Smashing Birds

Belgian alt-indie pop band Smashing Birds have released their second EP Dark Matters with 80s dark pop and mesmerising synths.

Comprised of Dieter Geernaert (vocals/guitar), Nir Shemmer (guitar/vocals), Bram De Muynck (bass/vocals), Jonathan De Smet (drums) and Jan Evens (keys/vocals), they love to “tinker” with songs, whilst spreading nostalgia in the process.

First track ‘Spirits’ has vocals like The XX and pumping pop synths with floating guitar melodies. ‘Black Love’ and ‘Things Unspoken’ are very futuristic and remind me of soundscapes like Space Odyssey. The space-like themes run throughout the EP as the pounding bass lines and ethereal soundscapes get you gripped.

Final track ‘I Cry’ is upbeat as Dieter’s and Nir’s vocals shine through the dark synths and steady drumbeat as the lyrics echo with a sharp edge.

Sharing an inexhaustible passion for everything that catches and sticks to their ears, Smashing Birds have a fresh sound that is interesting as it is inquisitive. Listen below and leave an ICM Rating out of 10.
