Red Hot Chili Peppers – The Getaway

Red Hot Chilli Peppers

I love Red Hot Chili Peppers. It is absolutely no secret that The RHCP are one of my all time favourites, so when I heard that a new album was on the way, I was just a little more than excited.

The Californiacation-ers (pardon the pun) 14 track album ‘The Getaway’ is lead singer Anthony Kiedis’s  reflection on relationships and love both new and old with a variety of light and dark flavours, typical Law and Order style funky basslines, the odd reference to California and gorgeous vocals from an un-aged voice that has influenced a generation since the early 90’s. We are greeted with four classic future classic songs that I certainly will be screaming in the car for years to come. We Turn Red and The Getaway are beautiful RHCP songs with wonderfully catchy choruses and godly basslines.

Stay away from this album if you’re expecting classic Chillies

It should be noted that this album is in no way in veneration of what a Red Hot Chili Peppers SHOULD be. Don’t get me wrong. Musically, this album is fantastic. Unfortunately, THIS album is incredibly safe. We were teased to a brand new side of the band, but in conjunction, have been given a safe sex tutorial filled with soft pianos, acoustic guitars and gentle shoegaze. I would be lying if I told you I loved this album. It saddens me that with age, The Chillies have turned into more serious musicians that are trying to hard to win our hearts back, but instead, have brought us something so safe and sorry, I can’t help but feel the bands anxiety all the way from across the pond.

Nice try guys. I still love you, but please come back with a bang.
