MAM Song of the Week – Sophie and the Giants ‘The Light’

Sophie and the giants

Back in September 2017, Modern Age Music was a once monthly club night in London. It had only been running for a couple of months, at its home at Alleycat on Denmark St. in Soho, London. This particular instalment included relatively unknown (at the time, Guildford-based) band Sophie and the Giants.

Fast-forward to July 2019 and the band are signed to Universal Germany, with debut single ‘The Light’ receiving mainstream support from press and radio alike. Sadly Alleycat is no longer open, the latest of Soho’s prized small venues lost. The progress of Sophie and the Giants in recent months is a fitting testament to the importance of grassroots venues; the starting point for the next generation of successful artists.

Now based in Sheffield, the four-piece are the rapidly-rising purveyors of ‘retro pop’, fronted by the enchanting vocals of singer Sophie Scott. Sophie explains of the track: “‘The Light’ was written when I was going through a particularly hard time in my life. It’s about finding the light beyond the darkness and focussing on where you need to be. I wanted to write a song that would let people know that there’s always a way to change their circumstance, no matter how dire things are.”
