MAM Song of the Week: Five Kites – ‘Leaving Town’

Brighton’s Five Kites have burst onto the local scene in recent months. The three-piece produced a powerhouse display at the Modern Age Music TGE stage back in May, and followed it up with an electric show supporting SONS on a sold-out show in September.

After a busy 2019 live calendar, the three-piece have now released their latest single ‘Leaving Town’. The track is another fuzzy, melodic rock track which throws us back to the grungey sound of 90’s alternative.

The band explain the thought behind the song: “It’s pretty easy to feel lost or confused when you finish education, not knowing what to do next and feeling dissatisfied with where things seem to be headed. It’s a pretty weird time if you don’t have an end goal already set to work towards and it can seem like things are in a state of limbo. It can go on for years. Some people cope with the change better than others and it can sometimes feel as if you are the only one stuck in a rut. Dead-end jobs, friends moving away and all the while getting older looking back at an easier time.

People are constantly trying to outdo each other on social media with updates on their seemingly perfect lives because that’s what they want you to see. They aren’t going to share the bad times. They aren’t going to share pics of them after getting fired or after a break-up (although I’d enjoy it a lot more if they did).

This track is a pretty much a story fueled by that feeling. It’s easy to feel left behind. It can sometimes seem like everybody is leaving town for their perfect future but it’s rarely the case. Everyone has been there.

Uncertainty, however, is what makes life fun. Who knows where we’ll end up? Just have fun.”
