Listen: Primal Scream – (Feeling Like A) Demon Again

June was looking dark for Primal Scream. After Frontman and general band leader Bobby Gillespie slipped on top of some speakers (and fell several feet into the crowd) during a performance at a swiss festival, the bands’ new album tour slid into a state of uncertainty.

However, after being treated for minor back injuries, Bobby and the band are back with an 18-date romp throughout November and December. Primal Scream will be playing shows throughout the U.K ending up at London’s Brixton Academy on the 15th.

Moody new drop ‘(Feeling Like A) Demon Again’ is the chosen single for Primal Screams freshest LP ‘Chaosmosis’, released February this year. It’s darker than what PS have often been noted for –screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-18-06-31 Brooding synths, gothic soundscapes and the minimalist drum-machine patterns tapping away in the distance make the track more akin to The Cures ‘A Forest’ than to any of the rave-rocker bangers, the band is famous for. Gillespie’s warbling voice
floats over the cool, shadowy groovy, lyrics perhaps referencing his struggle with sobriety and the problems with alcohol and drugs he’s had a difficult time battling with in the past; “Poison thoughts just ran away, wasted nights and wasted days” – a theme that carries on to the LPs next track ‘I can change’. Rehabilitation, Alcoholism and drug abuse are strong album themes, echoing Gillespie’s recent words about these areas of his life.

If you’re a Scream fan and you’ve given ‘Chaosmosis’ a listen you’ll know it certainly isn’t the bands’ previous incarnations of big dumb-garage rock. It’s a sober, thoughtful album that sonically and artistically experiments with what Primal Scream are known for doing and (Feeling Like A) Demon Again perhaps optimises this new ambient, gloomy direction.
