You may think that Declan McKenna is another generic indie teenager with a guitar, however, you will be surprised of the maturity he holds. Oozing intelligence, his songs are not about girls, school or home. Every release that he produces, the talent is constructed throughout the hard subjects in the lyrics which today’s generation may face: religion, growing up, and race to name a few. These topics are turned into something moving, channelling his frustrations with so much thought, you wouldn’t believe.
“The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home” is a huge shout out to those who look down, and judge the youth of today, with the fact that today’s youth actually want to change the world that we live in already. Challenging particular fears, and adults aren’t the only ones noticing the reality of world as we know it, so are the kids. The lyrics are fuelled of emotion; it can be penned as his most touching song to date.
The song is a political statement as a whole, the young artist was staying in Paris last year during the November 2015 attacks, leaving an enormous impression on him. Stating that the youth are excluded from political debates, having no voice, or opinion even considered. Younger generations are more politically aware than what previously thought.
Declan joined Mistajam on BBC Radio 1 last night, with it being the hottest record. Stating that the new single is “about finding hope and looking towards the future.” Being Glastonbury Festivals emerging talent competition winner in 2015, is something to be proud of with his fame blossoming – this isn’t the end of it yet.
If you are a fan of Jake Bugg, any other indie artists, or want to try something new, this new single is something to watch out for.
