Isle of Wight’s iconic indie queen Lauran Hibberd has released her new satire-fuelled, anthem-stacked EP ‘Goober’.
Having become a key figure within the emerging indie elite in the space of two years, Lauran Hibberd is on the tip of everyone’s tongues as her six-track masterpiece.
Kicking off with latest single ‘Bleugh’, it’s a gritty rock anthem that sums up Lauan’s adult reaction to her pre-naive self. Lyrically delving into boring people essentially, the track puts herself centre stage once again and is arguably her most confident work to date.
Moving swiftly onto ‘Old Nudes and ‘Boy Bye’, Lauran keeps satire on the top of her list as these songs, based on true stories, as power-hungry riffs strike like lightning. She amps up any room with ease and has this ability to keep her charm and tongue-in-cheek attitude on her sleeve.
“We’ve all been there right!?” say Lauran on ‘Old Nudes’. “The track looks back on the ‘mistake’, and almost mocks it using overconfidence. It belittles the receiver, and oozes sarcasm and naivety.”
April saw the release of ‘How Am I Still Alive?’, a dream collaboration with The Regrettes’ Lydia Night. Both vocal presences complement each other nicely as the fuzzed-up indie pop track, filled with charisma and whit, toys with the bleakness of everyday life and makes it sound more entertaining than it actually is.
Onto previously unheard tracks ‘Crush’ and ‘You Never Looked So Cool’, which bring the Goober EP to a close, the guitars leave the dirt and grit behind as Lauran brings the speed down a notch. ‘Crush’ features a lot of romantic to-and-fro’s that reference past summers of love.
‘You Never Looked So Cool’ feels spacious as the guitars and synths leave more room for her vocals and nostalgic feeling lyrics to open up. Arguably one of Hibberd’s stand out moments, it feels strange to be hearing a toned-down song. It leaves you craving for more
“‘Goober’ has been a long time in the making”, explains Hibberd. “It has survived a global pandemic and many mood swings from me. These tracks all summarise what I’ve been thinking over the last twelve months. I hope for your sake, you can’t relate haha!”
Lauran Hibberd’s status continues to grow, and with multiple festival dates and an autumn UK headline tour to come, she’s certainly primed to take full advantage of 2021.
