Kandalini experiment with DIY indie and garage rock

Melbourne trio Kandalini showcase their DIY approach to indie rock with new single ‘A Lot Like You’.

Originally comprised of Johnny Foti (Drums) and Dale Mamo (Vocals, Guitar), they first started playing covers at lunchtime in their “abysmal” school playing years before starting to write their own music and hitting the local pubs.

After various iterations with multiple other members, they finally met Scott Gulbis after posting flyers around town looking for a dedicated bass player. The band said he “hooked onto the multiple subtle Camp Cope references on the poster and never thought twice”.

‘A Lot Like You’ is a song about identity, it’s about acknowledging your humanity and your weaknesses. It follows up on debut single ‘A Song Called Pain’ which is a heavier track and a more all-rounded rock ‘n’ roll tune.

The band added: “It’s about understanding and accepting your likeness to those around you and despite your superficial differences, despite all your efforts to set yourself apart, we’re all open to the same failures and temptations.”

Their DIY indie rock has a garage vibe to it, allowing the trio to capture their vision for the music, despite being off the cusp. They say they have limitations in terms of ability and available gear, but I have to say they’ve done a bloody good job.
