2018 has been an amazing year for film, there have been so many highly anticipated movies that have not disappointed. Winnie The Pooh came back to life in Christopher Robin, a 14-year wait proved worth it for The Incredibles 2, and Mamma Mia 2 had us all singing in the cinema.
Surprisingly, the best movies came from places we weren’t expecting, here are the Nominees.
THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
Three Billboards can have you in fits of laughter one minute and close to tears the next. If that’s not evidence of great writing than I don’t know what is. It’s the kind of film where you just cannot predict what’s going to happen next and that’s just such a rare quality nowadays.

Coco
The film does a great job of appealing to both children and adults alike. When you think about it the film actually deals with some pretty heavy subject matters. In true Pixar fashion though it finds a way to make it more easily digestible for younger minds without coming off as flat out patronising.

FIRST MAN
Space exploration will always be a point of human curiosity and a true test of cinematography. So where better to start than with the story of Neil Armstrong, the ‘First Man’. It’s a story as old as time, but even after all these years, it’s still just as fascinating as ever because the journey is different every time.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Freddie Mercury was one in a million, truly larger than life, so I can only imagine the pressure must have been crippling for Malek to fill these shoes.
It almost feels like an insult to refer to it as a performance because here Malek practically embodies Mercury and in a film such as this, anything else just wouldn’t be good enough.

BLACKKKLANSMAN
The film was marketed as a biographical comedy/drama, but it’s a horror film. I mean there’s a point where things seem to be wrapping up and it’s all going pretty well for our black protagonist Ron Stallworth. However, the sudden shift to footage of black people being mown down in the streets of America as recent as 2017 really hits you like a punch to the gut. I’d say it’s more terrifying than anything I’ve ever seen in a horror film because it’s real.
