Friday’s Finest is back on ICM once again. The weekly feature alongside It’s All Indie, Turtle Tempo and Nexus Music Blog, highlights the lastest track we’ve been digging albeit old or new. This week’s features a special Premier League guest in Bobby Madley! The former top-flight referee officiated games between 2013 and 2018, but did you know he’s a passionate music fan? Find out more below…
Special Guest Bobby Madley: Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion – ‘Stillhouse Blues’
As a Country Music fan I love all eras of the genre from classic 50s Hank Locklin to modern country. It would be easy to pick one of the big names of country like Brad Paisley (who was incredible recently in Copenhagen) but one song that I’m loving at the moment is a song called ‘Stillhouse Blues’ by a not so well known band called Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion.
Having heard and liked their previous songs such as ‘Bloody Bill’ and ‘Holy Smoke’ their new offering reminded me of a slow Bon Jovi rock song with a really good raw country voice.
I know Country isn’t for everyone and the perceptions of leather strides and twangy banjos puts most off from even trying to like it…however those who like a bit of rock and a bit of that twang could certainly get on board with this band!
Nexus Music Blog: I’m No Chessman – ‘Let It Burn’
I’m No Chessman have been on the ascendency since their previous EP ‘Amateurs’. The band have an uncanny ability to diversify and are not afraid to provide drama and intrigue from the outset. ‘Let It Burn’ provides a similar sound for the band as what was given on their previous EP. The huge difference is the reinforced boldness, the doubling down of their confidence in their own ability and direction. It is a track that might take a few listens to get stuck in your head, but it is theatrical and a nice addition to an already experimental, spanning catalogue of various influences.
Turtle Tempo: Silvertwin – ‘Ploy’
I’ve been eagerly counting down the days until London-based band Silvertwin released their debut single ‘Ploy’ and finally we’re blessed with being able to hear this original, fun & poptastic banger on streaming platforms. It’s early days but you can’t help but have a sneaky feeling that this quartet will go down in musical history as one of the greats just like the clear influences of their sound have, which include The Beach Boys & ABBA.
Despite only just dropping their very first single, Silvertwin have a vastly growing reputation with their amazing, highly energetic and breathtaking live shows, so much so that they completely packed out their first headline show at Strongroom Bar.
It’s All Indie: Inhaler – ‘We Have To Move On’
Hotly-tipped Dublin quartet Inhaler have released their new single “We Have To Move On”. It’s their follow-up to much hyped first single on their new label (Polydor), “Ice Cream Sundae”, which was released in September to accalim from the BBC and many online zines.
The spritely indie-rock of “We Have To Move On” showcases the band’s twist of sound with this one combining more synth, melodies that make you swoon every time you listen to it with some guitars that bring a whole lot of atmosphere to the game. We’ve hotly tipped them on It’s All Indie to be a ‘Sound of 2020’, and judging by this new track we’re gonna be expecting them to set the scene alight.
ICM: Cage The Elephant ft. Iggy Pop – ‘Broken Boy’
Cage The Elephant share a new version of their song “Broken Boy,” featuring Iggy Pop. The track finds the godfather of punk singing a verse and contributing backing vocals to the opening song off the band’s celebrated fifth studio album, Social Cues.
The ICM Awards Best Internation Act 2019 winners have excelled recently and this new collaboration just goes hand-in-hand. Their raucous and fierce track has just been made even better.
Frontman Matt Shultz spoke of his adoration of Iggy ‘He’s such a pioneer in so many fields: “lyrically, culturally, poetically, visually, musically, and stylistically. Only a couple times in your life do you have the opportunity to share a moment with a visionary and beautiful human as he is,” he continues. “Grateful and blown away to have experienced and witnessed, not just his creativity, but also his kindness, humility, and humanness first hand. Such a testimony to the power of love.”
Said Iggy Pop about his collaboration with the band: “Cage is a super high energy outfit, living the Rock dream, so for a couple of fun minutes I was one of the boys. Sounds pretty wicked to me.”
