DAAY carefully craft mellow dream pop with psychedelic indie rock

Since debuting their first song at the foot of a global pandemic, melodic psych-rockers DAAY have returned with single ‘First Light’.

Formed in London by Alex Barty-King, the new project brings together five musicians from Lebanon and France. Sighting their influences of psychedelic jazz, dreamy mellow pop, and indie rock, the band have some serious groove.

After releasing ‘Mama’ in 2020, the band came under fire from an American rapper named DAY (standing for deliverance amongst youth) and subsequently had to change their name by adding an extra ‘A’.

Glad to be clear of “angry Americanism” the band – I assume jokingly – said they are now “happier than we could have ever imagined”.

Now onto the second single, ‘First Light’ is quite an experimental song as DAAY’s curiosity seeps through from powerful jazz parts, tropical-like drums and a unique blend of rock/pop songwriting.

Speaking about the meaning behind the single, the band said: “The song is about finding comfort and rejuvenation at the start of a new day and serves as a metaphor for new beginnings and new life.

“It’ a statement of his positivity about the overall future of the planet and the human race.”

DAAY are using their time to push the musical barriers further and have aptly done so. ‘First Light’ comes across culturally interesting, as well as sonically through shimmering cymbals and Alex’s simple, yet effective vocal presence.

DAAY show no sign of stopping either, as they confirm their third single ‘Little Foot’ is the second single of a set of three, which is due to be released in March 2021. Alex says all three singles represent the journey out of the womb and into the world.
