By Sit back and relax as Nathan Ball’s new acoustic EP is seriously worth a listen. Developing a raw sound with an alternative ambience and beautiful, poetic lyrics.
The London singer and songwriter sounds so natural, stripping back his singles ‘Drifting‘, ‘Waste of Time’ and ‘Right Place‘. And to top it all off, Ball has thrown in a soulful cover of Gnarls Barkley smash hit ‘Crazy’.
Soothing acoustic riffs and Ball’s soulful vocals instantly stand out throughout the EP, it’s a haunting, self-reflective journey back to how these songs were first written; one man and a guitar.
Everything about Nathan Ball feels unforced, it seems so natural, easy and calming as it connects the listener to the outdoor surroundings as it was meant to sound like.
In a remote part of the British countryside in Cornwall, Nathan and his writing/production partner Max Radford re-crafted the acoustic versions taking everything back to the basics.
Speaking on the EP, Nathan said: “I wanted to give people an idea of how the songs were initially written and really strip things back.
“It’s suddenly quite nerve-wracking feeling so exposed with just vocals and a guitar or a piano, but I love the honesty in it all, it feels raw and true.”
Much of Nathan’s material is connected to the outdoor surroundings it is written in. “It’s where I write best; by the sea, in the mountains, on the road. I love being totally immersed in nature so naturally, those themes find their way into the music.
“It felt right to record this EP down by the sea in the winter, I think that really comes through on the record. I love the fact you can hear the creaks of the piano, it really captures the atmosphere that was going on down there.”
