“Trying very hard to never get a proper job,” multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer, Makeup has released his new single ‘Pretty Boys and Broken Hearts’.

Starting with a simple story-driven song, the melodic riffs and soulful vocals bring an uplifting spirit from lockdown. The acoustic track pulls on heartstrings and can reminisce with most young adults.

Known as Matt S-Davies, he’s been playing guitar since he was 13 and began writing songs at Coventry University. Since then he has released three singles, his first ‘Everybody Wants to Be In Love’ gained BBC introducing Coventry and Warwickshire airplay.

Speaking about his recent single, Matt said: “It was written after matching with a girl on Tinder and finding out that she was only on there to pass the time while waiting for her ex who seemed to have no real intention of coming back until it was convenient for him. It’s a sad story but a lot of people have been in the same situation.”

Taking inspiration from bands such as The Beatles, Arctic Monkeys, Pixies, and David Bowie, Makeup’s songwriting is heavily influenced by rock and roll, with an emphasis on lyricism.

“I try to be as honest as I can with my writing. Naturally, there will be some creative embalmment, I try to make sure my thoughts and feelings on various subjects to take precedence, adds Matt. “Musically I feel I am still searching for my sound, but I’m wary of writing the same song twice or boxing myself into one specific genre or style.”
