Hidden Charms

Y Not Exclusive Interview – Hidden Charms

In Less than two days time, Y Not Festival will turn Pikehall, near Matlock, from a mass of fields into an exhilarating, 4 day bender full of music lovers going crazy of Noel Gallagher, who may or may not sing Wonderwall. While we are uncertain about that previous statement, we are certain that Hidden Charms are performing on the Saturday. With a huge amount of dates lined up for the coming months, Y Not is their starting point. We’ve had a chat with Lead Singer Vinnie, on what their set will be about and what they’re looking forward to over the weekend.

Stephen McMahon: What was your approach to the festival season this year?

Vinnie [Hidden Charms Lead Singer]: I think the approach with every show is to show everyone exactly why they should be coming to see you and not another band! But I think it’s even more the case with festivals because you have the opportunity to gage more new fans.

Stephen McMahon: When it comes to the reception of your music, how does it vary? Also what’s the fanbase like?

Vinnie: I think there is quite a varied reaction to us because there is a lot of variation in what we do, some of our stuff can be aggressive and other stuff can be straight pop music, hopefully this broadens our appeal! From my experience our fans are exactly like us, just people who are passionate about music or film or fashion which makes me very proud.

Stephen McMahon: What initially attracted you to Y Not festival, and made you want to take part in it?

Vinnie: The line up for me is very good because on the one hand you have the big acts like Noely G, Madness etc which supply the mass sing a longs but also the newer and smaller acts too which at this festival are top quality bands like The Vryll Society, Black Honey, Cabbage and so many more.. For me a great festival has to have both kinds of bands so well done!

Stephen McMahon: When gigging and performing live shows at festivals such as, Y Not Festival, how does the audience differ to a headline gig at a music venue?

Vinnie: For a new band, playing a great show at a festival is definitely a way to get yourself out to more people than you ever could in your local, but for me nothing beats a crowd of your own even if there’s only 20 of them.

Stephen McMahon: Your set at Y Not Festival is at The Allotment on Saturday, 8pm. What can we expect from your set in particular?

Vinnie: It’s one of the festivals that I’ve been looking forward to the most and as we’re coming to the end of the season we’re going to want to bow out in style so expect the best and hopefully we’ll bring everything we’ve got.

Stephen McMahon: Who would you recommend to also go see at Y Not Festival?

Vinnie: Other than the bands already mentioned, I would like to see the Fun Loving Criminals and The Coral.

Stephen McMahon: Whats in store for the future of Hidden Charms?

Vinnie: We’re doing a joint tour with The Vryll Society October/November and we’re working on newer more abrasive music to come out around the same time.
