High Tyde

Tramlines Festival Exclusive – Interview With High Tyde

Tramlines Festival will partake in its eighth year this weekend. On the bill are young and aspiring musicians, High Tyde. With plenty of live experience, they will be gracing one of Sheffield’s leading venues, The Leadmill, on Saturday to a range of festival goers. The band, hailing from Brighton, will once again bring their upbeat indie jams to the city of Sheffield, to which an unforgettable atmosphere shall explode.

Stephen McMahon: Overall feelings for Tramlines Festival?

High Tyde: Very excited! We’ve only ever played in Sheffield once when we were really tiny. I think we actually only played to 2 people, so this time should be a lot better!

Stephen McMahon: What has been your band’s approach to the whole festival scene this year?

High Tyde: Well, we’ve switched up the set here and there and created extended songs for live performances. At festivals people want to move about more, they aren’t at a music venue on a Monday night so they’re all happy and drunk. We just try to keep the energy up as much as we can and the crowd interaction is a lot heavier. Just to make everyone have a lot of fun. High Tyde

Stephen McMahon: We managed to speak to you only a few months ago whilst you were performing at The Sugarmill in Stoke-On-Trent. We clearly saw people connecting with your music. Do the crowds tend to receive your music well at all the shows?

High Tyde: Yes, we are seeing them a lot more now. Earlier when we released our first EP, we went on tour and people didn’t know who we were. So, now to play shows to people who actually know our songs and the words is great. That’s what we live for obviously. But people connect with us more and we try and put on the best show every night, places like Stoke-on-Trent where the crowd sang the words… madness.

Stephen McMahon: When the crowd needs a bit of motivation, what is it like for you?

Cody [High Tyde lead vocalist]: As a front man, I’m basically trained to get the crowd going. When some of the crowd doesn’t know what we are about, I just see it as a challenge. If we can get the one-half of the crowd who are going crazy to go crazy enough to make the other half want to join in the craziness, then it’ll go well. And why wouldn’t they? They’re at a festival!

Stephen McMahon: Your set at Tramlines Festival is at The Leadmill. 8:15PM on Saturday. What’s planned for the set?

High Tyde: A Banging set man! It’s going to be ‘rad’ from start to finish. A few hidden gems. Some stuff we haven’t performed live before, and maybe even a song no one has ever even heard before. Especially to play The Leadmill as well, it’ll be sick! We’re just going to smash it out. We’ll be getting in the crowd too, as you do!

Stephen McMahon: Have you got a set list organised for the show?

High Tyde: We have the classics, ‘Do What You Want’, ‘Dark Love’ and ‘Feel It’. But we will do a couple of songs off the new EP that we haven’t played live before. So, we’re excited to test the water with those and see how people react to the new songs.

Stephen McMahon: Tramlines Festival is known for getting all the venues in Sheffield on board and that means there is a wide range of music for the fans. How would you persuade people to come see you instead of any other band on at the same time?

High Tyde: Us playing live, to be honest. The way we play, the energy, the people at our shows and the way that they react is something that we haven’t seen when we’ve seen other new bands perform. At our shows, it’s always a bit different, people seem to lose themselves with the music. That’s our unique selling point.

Stephen McMahon: Is this your first time at Tramlines Festival?

High Tyde: Yes, we’ve only been to Sheffield once, we played a tiny gig and about 2 or 3 people showed up but we still smashed it. But bands have to go through that. As a band, you have to plant the seed and wait for it to grow.

Stephen McMahon: Describe the experience you’re expecting.

High Tyde: Well, we love these festivals where it’s not in fields and actually at venues. We have one Brighton, called The Great Escape, and we’re always at it every year. They just have such a good vibe and I’m really excited. We’ve been getting loads of tweets and they seem up for it. The Leadmill as well is a great venue, so it should be good. Really sweaty and hopefully some crowd surfing. [Stephen: Will you be crowd surfing? Who knows, maybe.

Stephen McMahon: Who would you recommend to also go see at Tramlines Festival over the weekend?

High Tyde: Obviously you’ve got Catfish and the Bottlemen – who are the main ones. Hinds are really good, we’re into them at the moment. And Mystery Jets, their new album is banging!  Tramlines Festival

Stephen McMahon: Lastly, we hope High Tyde goes on to great things, what’s in store for you guys in the next 12 months?

High Tyde: Well we’ve got our next tour in October and the tickets are selling really fast. Buzzing for it because we get to play at bigger venues this time. Definitely, some more music coming very soon, some overseas stuff. It’s going to be a great 12 months.
