Everything about The Watermelons new EP is relaxed and chilled out, none of the songs have a sense of urgency to them. The EP is called ‘Best of you’, named after the first track on it.
After listening to this EP, I really want to see The Watermelons live. All the songs here have aspects that would make them great to listen to while in a crowd. The clap along nature, the ‘Hey’s that pop-up and the fast paced nature of some of the songs make them come alive. A crowd would get warmed up quickly, while getting more and more involved with the band.
The cover art shows the nature of the music with the pastel use of colours, the start of ‘Best Of You’ Is particularly colorful and fruity. The lyrics are simple, easy to learn and sing along to. Toby Bain and David Kelly’s uncommon sounding voices lift the track, making everything sound more youthful.
‘This Time’ is different to the other songs on the EP, it has a country and western feel to it. This mixed with the soft guitar riffs creates a combination that works well. It’s not the best song on the EP, but it is still a pleasing song that changes throughout, challenging you with a new sound.
‘If You Want To Love Me’ starts a bit like a theme tune from a children’s program, with its light and cheerful chimes before the vocals start. This is by no means a bad thing, the whole song is a non-offensive, light-hearted song that couldn’t get any cheerful if it tried.
‘To Be In Love’ is a faster-paced song, it would probably be awesome to listen to live with a pumped crowd. It’s a typical feel-good, indie pop song, in the way that it uses delightful guitar licks on a cheerful background.
