The Music that made us is back! After a short break, we return with the Second artist from our Blogtober gig, Glass Peaks. Hailing from Kent, these boys are breaking out into the scene and gathering support for their latest singles. After only forming in 2016, Glass Peaks grafted away and have become one of Kent’s brightest prospects. Here is what they had to say about their roots:
ICM: Tell me a bit about Glass Peaks, how did it all start?
Jake: Myself and grant were in a band prior to Glass Peaks and after returning from working in America for a few months I really wanted to get out there gigging again with a fresh new band. A few months down the line, we got Alf involved and started making bangers and mash.
ICM: What band inspired you to start making music
Jake: It has to be Arctic Monkeys, Hendrix and BB KING! I remember buying Hendrix albums from Woolworths (RIP) and begging my mum to let me play them super loud in the car.
Alfie: Radiohead. My dad came home from work one day with a copy of “Hail To The Thief” and it absolutely blew my mind. It was an instant obsession that has never faded. Their ability to evolve and change with every album has always astounded me. They’re also the best live band EVER.
Grant: Bloc Party for me. I first heard Banquet through my brother, then I came across Silent Alarm and in turn Matt Tong and they really inspired me.
ICM: Is there a song which reminds you of the days when you had just formed?
Alfie: Probably Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. I don’t know why but I have a feeling that we went through a phase of singing the opening line of that tune at the top of our lungs at one point early on haha! There is another song that Grant played in the car one time on a VERY late journey home from Derby. It’s ‘Moonlight Shadow’ by Mike Oldfield. That tune reminds me of the band and just makes me smile every time I hear it now. Maybe it should be our walk on song.
ICM: When growing up what were the tracks which defined your adolescence?
Jake: My parents listened to a lot of soul and smooth fm, pure groove. So I had a lot of that growing up, but when I first started getting into music as a kid my mum said I got addicted to the track ‘Englishman in New York’ by Sting, listening to it on repeat in the car! The first single I ever bought was ‘Ignition-Remix’ by R Kelly which is still THE best tune in the world. Soon after that I developed an unhealthy obsession with Arctic Monkeys just as their first single dropped and they’re the reason I picked up a guitar.
Alfie: I became obsessed with Michael Jackson at the age of around eight years old, I bought every single album with pocket money and played “Billie Jean” from Thriller so many times that the track started to skip on the CD – tragic! I discovered my love for rock music when I heard my older sister listening to My Chemical Romance at the age of 13. I was completely taken with the theatrics of the “Helena” video and the way that the “Im (not) Okay” video was shot to look like a movie. Their sound was angsty and loud and I absolutely loved it. I literally wanted to be Frank Iero.
This, coincidentally, was around the same time I started playing the guitar during an “expressive arts week” at my school. From there, my musical palette exploded. I was introduced to Grunge and Nirvana, Pop/Funk and Jamiroquai, Britpop and Oasis, Grime and Dizzee Rascal. You could’ve played me anything and I’d have given it an honest, interested and unbiased listen. Then my dad bought home “Hail To The Thief” by Radiohead and I have never stopped obsessing over them since.
ICM: look into the future, Whats up next for Glass Peaks?
Alfie: We’ll likely be back in the studio before the end of this year. We’re keen to really step it up a gear towards the end of this year into next year. We’ve got some big ideas and we’re hungrier than ever.
ICM: You are part of ICM’s Blogtober Gig at the Finsbury, how are you feeling about this?
Jake: We haven’t played the Finsbury yet so that’s exciting. We’re super excited to be a part of Blogtober. Let’s pack it out ah?
Alfie: We’re absolutely stoked. IndieCentralMusic has been so great to us since we started out and it’s awesome to be part of their Blogtober gig. It’s going to be a special one. I can feel it in ma booonneeeesss!
