The Cat Magic revel in dark psyche and atmospheric alt rock
Bristol alt rock band The Cat Magic are back with their dark and racing new single ‘Dovetail Me,’ the beginning of more singles to come.
Since forming in 2018, two childhood friends, Laurence Matone and Alexei Hnatiw were armed with a hard drive filled with demos until the pair soon recruited Alexei’s brother, Stefan, and work could start turning a bedroom project into a fully functional, multi-instrumentalist driven, live outfit.
The new track ‘Dovetail Me’ is part of four songs that were recorded before lockdown. Following up on previous release ‘Just The Way’ they return with a unique and melodic offering, The Cat Magic discuss the themes of confronting dark corners of the psyche, paranoia and self-doubt.
Over a tense soundscape that’s atmospheric, dark and racing, ‘Dovetail Me’ is eerily crooned using stair-like melodies and spectral guitar picking. The song also highlights the desperation for union and the longing for a central void to be filled.
Speaking about the track, the trio said: “The listener is served with an abrupt mid-section which is almost detached from the main song.
“As if the ethereal dark fog clears and the sun shines, lyrical themes reminisce about a fleeting yet unspectacular younger years memory before diving back down into the depths of the ghostly vocal repeats of the chorus.”
Devotees of bands like Tame Impala, The War On Drugs and Radiohead, the band recorded over several months at HUMM Studios and Sion Hill the beginning of 2020. Hugo Bishop (drums, percussion, samples) and Adam Coates (synthesiser) joined the group in mid-2020 further expanding the band’s sonic possibilities.
