Song Of The Week: Affairs – Play

The Manchester quintet Affairs are to digitally release their latest single ‘Play’. The synth filled charm pop song has gathered a lot of attention through BBC Introducing whilst they were studying at Hull University. XFM and BBC 6Music have had the singles backing over the last few months.

Affairs have established themselves on the indie stage in recent years alongside big indie acts such as; Coasts, Alt-J and Dog Is Dead. ‘Play’ draws you in with its heavy and deep vocal intro synth-riff from frontman Jim Robinson, while an infectious tom-tom pattern powers the track along.

Lyrically, Play is all about “the complexities of relationships and how we sometimes hide behind a facade or ‘play games’ with one another rather than facing up to our problems.” Lead vocalist Robinson closes the track with the simple realisation of “How much do we want it?”
