Shimmerance combines alt rock with shoegaze on debut LP
Releasing their self-titled debut album to the world is Russian shoegaze outfit Shimmerance as they put their own unique sound onto the map.
Since forming in 2016, members Maria Kondakova (vocals), Nik Babukhin (guitar, vocals), Konstantin Gryaznov (drums), Mikhail Churikov (bass) and Yuri Yakovlev (guitar) have been building up to this moment by crafting each song individually.
By combining alt rock with unconventional shoegaze the band’s sound comes from their influences of Swervedriver, Dinosaur Jr. and Smashing Pumpkins.
‘Scryscraper’, ‘Look At Me’ and penultimate track ‘Wasting Time’ have a rhythmic and upbeat tone whilst holding on tight to the fuzzy atmospherics that feature throughout Shimmerance.
Songs like ‘Falling Down’ and Gone Everything’ have huge solos before Maria’s vocals shine through the fuzzy walls of sounds and reverb feeling at its core. But the melody content is really important for the band, the album feels pure and is an enjoyable listen.
Speaking about their self-titled debut, Nik Babukhin said: “Lyrical content is what’s important for us actually. We don’t use shoegaze stereotypes ‘vocals is another sound’ – we sing what we want to be heard. So, what we sing about should somehow make sense for you.
“What I write about is the simplest of things; from thoughts of changing your life, abstract forms and visions, different worlds and universes. Every song has its own story and I’m trying not to repeat myself.
“This album is a huge milestone for us. The content is awesome, the recording is rich, the concept of its sound is nailed. We did our job well; we are proud if this album. And we really want the world to hear it.”
Overall, the songs are quite long and diverse, with different parts and huge solos – and different feelings. Mixing shoegaze concept with modern approaches is the Shimmerance way.
