I’m not one to go through an album song by song. I find it incredibly boring and unoriginal so take that however you will and enjoy my review.
Although born and bred as a band in the UK’s capital city, Beach Baby’s twangy, beautiful take on a more beach-esque alternative-pop finds it roots across all corners of the UK and the world. The four-piece band including; Lawrence (guitar, vocals), Ollie (guitar, keys, vocals), Iraklis (bass), and Shep (drums) – met in the musically-rich halls of Goldsmiths College in London where the iconic sound began to flourish.
The album in itself is incredibly individual in all aspects of its nature. I feel an overwhelming large sense of pride when a band i genuinely like sticks to their guns and brings out music that they know won’t branch out to a mainstream audience. but Instead, release the album purely for the love of music. The enigmatic beach indie with gorgeous vocals and raw guitar licks that oozes with Beach Babys awesome flavour of music is the perfect response to a first album that focuses on solely on individualism.
Personal Highlights:
- The fifth track on the debut album titled ‘Smoke Won’t Get You High’ is filled to the brim with a barrage of beautiful lead and backup vocals that create an almost psychedelic and enchanting harmony.
- THE SMITHS REBORN? The final track is the perfect sollum saddener that leaves an everlasting wave of poetic depression ringing in your ears. Beach Baby have embodied a Smiths/Morrissey-esque nature for the final track with a modern twist. The repetitive line ‘How Lucky You Are’ at the end of the song will be embedded in your memory forever more. You will certainly be singing this pissed on a park bench somewhere.
The Only Downside:
- The album titled track sounds completely different to the original which pains me ever so slightly as the song ‘No Mind No Money’ was that track that got me into Beach Baby. All is forgiven because it’s still a fat track.
There you have it. Congratulations to Beach Baby on an awesome debut album. I look forward to seeing you guys on the 9th at Scala. Let us know if you’re going via twitter!
