Puppet Rebellion release new single The Pact

Puppet Rebellion

Manchester based band, Puppet Rebellion, are making a huge impact up north which is sure to resonate elsewhere. Following on from two critically acclaimed EPs, (‘Chemical Friends’ and ‘No Means Yes’) the quintet have released their new single ‘The Pact’ which proves to be status affirming. In my view Puppet Rebellion allure to the likes of Dog Is Dead (D.I.D) and The Sherlocks; an upbeat cacophony of driving drums, catchy guitar riffs and soaring melodies. But there’s also a hint of Fatherson in there – a band who performed at Reading Festival this year – that’s always reassuring!

‘The Pact’ cuts straight to the chase with reverberated guitars and crashing drums whilst the vocals of Oliver Davies engage immediately. Oliver Davies proves in ‘The Pact’ that he is able to construct hook-driven melodies with intelligent lyricism, this is evoked in the chorus with the line “I took my last chance on you.” If anything, this truly sets Puppet Rebellion apart from the vast sea of established indie bands, as there is perhaps a lack of great lyrics out there. As all choruses should be, the chorus in ‘The Pact’ is the rightful centre piece of the song, not only because of Davies’ lyrics but also a great subtle descending lead line; once you’ve heard it you won’t stop hearing it.

Clocking in at a mere three minutes and with hooks aplenty, it would be surprising if ‘The Pact’ hasn’t already made it onto Manchester radio playlists or indeed larger radio stations. If anything, the melody, whilst catchy, largely sits in the same vocal range for Oliver Davies throughout the song which may be grating after a while. Nonetheless, this is a top effort by a confident emerging band, and it will be exciting to see where they end up.
