Having only been on the scene for around a year, Overpass have already made huge waves in not only Birmingham’s music scene but beyond.
Having released their highly-anticipated debut single ‘One Night Lover at the end of 2020, Overpass have done an impressive job of building a presence for themselves and that presence will only continue to grow.
Influenced by some big names like The Strokes, The Wombats and Inhaler, ‘Otherside of Midnight’, released February 19th, definitely has the veins of a true indie rock anthem. A catchy lyrical foundation alongside a humming guitar line and energetic drum soundscape, build throughout the track and you can see how the band have amassed over 2000 monthly listeners already.
The track opens with an acoustic offering, albeit quieter than you’d expect. The first few seconds become a catalyst of nostalgia – it’s like hearing a song through only one dodgy pair of headphones, or in the other room at a house party. Sure, it’s not what you expect. But it expertly serves up a building soundscape before quickly bursting into life and bringing the energy to 100%.
The band comment that ‘Otherside of Midnight’ illustrates a lack of power and control in being unable to help someone help themselves. But, it offers up a positive light that comes with “embracing the possibilities with a new perspective” and a play of the title of the track being that after all there is an ‘other’ side to the darkness of midnight.
In just a few months since ‘One Night Lover’, the band have refined their sound in flawless production and a rich yet distinctive sound, but there’s still a rawness and nostalgia that draws fans into this promising band. Time will only tell what is next for Overpass but we can pretty much place bets on the fact their future will be a golden one.
