New Music Alert: Sunset Sons – VROL

Sunset Sons

Anyone would think that a band who has formed in the surf capital of Europe (Hossegor, France) would produce songs which are perfect for listening to by the coast when the sun is out, and that is exactly the case with the brand new song by Sunset Sons, titled VROL. Admittedly, I missed the Sunset Son’s set on the NME stage at Reading Festival earlier this year, and my initial thought on listening to VROL was that it would be great live – it appears I’ve missed out.

The song appears as the sixteenth track on the deluxe version of the band’s new album ‘Very Rarely Say Die’; a 23-track, one hour long indie rock ride. Thereby you can only assume that Sunset Sons have gotten pretty good at this whole songwriting business. Indeed VROL exemplifies that the band are cementing themselves as one of the most exciting emerging indie bands.

VROL cuts to the chase and enters with energetic drums, a great descending guitar riff and a funky bass line. This makes way for the vocals of Rory Williams, who has a really engaging vocal quality (listen and you’ll see what I mean). The chorus is also a compelling aspect of the song, whilst perhaps not the catchiest chorus going, it definitely sticks in your head for a while. Another strongpoint of the song is the chiming keyboard of Rory Williams, which is particularly striking in the first eight bars of the chorus before Jed Laidlaw enters with a great drum fill.

Although a strong single, I can’t help but feel that there is something missing in VROL, perhaps it would be nice to hear the opening guitar riff come into play more, or even if the song were another 30 seconds longer… However there’s nothing wrong with wanting more.

VROL captures the sort of breezy energy which is prominent in songs by other indie rockers such as Circa Waves and Coasts. Whilst not a huge step into unexplored territory, you can certainly enjoy what Sunset Sons have to offer.
