Modern Age Music Song of the Day: The Jacques – ‘Swift Martin’
After early success supporting The Libertines and signing to Gary Powell’s label, The Jacques had a hiatus before re-emerging in 2019 and signing to Modern Sky UK.
The London/Bristol quartet have continued their upward trajectory with new single ‘Swift Martin’, a dark, brooding track driven by 80’s synth, scuzzed-out guitars and the captivating punk drawl of lead singer Finn. ‘Swift Martin’ has an almost unnerving allure.
Singer Finn explains: “‘Swift Martin’ is cyclical one-chord synth-punk tune that was never, ever supposed to be single. I could’ve sworn the words “no-ones gonna take you to heaven” had come up in some sort of idiomatic sense before, but I’ve searched since writing it and apparently I made it up.
