THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS – Les CactusAlex Turner and Miles Kane have entirely changed the game with the release of their new EP, ‘The Dream Synopsis’; with a combination of exceptional covers from the likes of The Fall, Leonard Cohen and others, this pivotal move from the duo has revealed a new realm of potential. Where their own tunes don’t allow for demonstrations of the lads’ full vocal and musical ability, attempting to put their own spin on some legendary tracks gives them opportunity to do so.
Second on the tracklist for the EP is the epic ‘Les Cactus’, originally by Jacques Dutronc. It’s not hard to tell why the guys thought this song would be effective to interpret themselves; with lyrics that radiate nonsensical yet possibly metaphorically inspirational (at a stretch) madness, complex orchestral phrases and guitar riffs that could cut glass, it’s bursting at the seams with creative opportunity and excuses to display the bizarre natures of the inseparable two.
The Last Shadow Puppets embarked on a Summer tour this year, on which they gave a trial run or two to ‘Les Cactus’, and it’s impossible to ignore the passion that the two dedicate to this song; not shy of an enthusiastic spark, chants consisting of the French words for ‘ow’ and ‘ouch’ make for an amusingly empowering listening experience.
