Listen: Sun Circus – We Went To War

Sun Circus

Indie newcomers Sun Circus release new single ‘We Went to War’. The four lads played in various bands before creating their indie pop tunes in their current band.

Sun Circus all played in various bands with one another previous to their current incarnation, and their well-placed confidence runs throughout their songs, including ‘We Went to War’. Sun Circus themselves are fighting words on their arrival to the music scene with groove driven indie; no jingle jangle, just real depth.

‘We Went to War’ feels like a Black Keys highlight track, and is a much grittier departure from previous debut single ‘Got That Feeling’. A healthy swagger, the verses gets heads shaking, grabbing the listener’s interest and managing to keep it. The result is a real pleasure, and a muscular expansion on their indie-pop debut last year.

Style-wise there is a drop for the chorus, before a blast of energised guitars that draw from sources like Brighton-duo Royal Blood or even Muse. Bassist Sammy spits out a blues lick that delivers a real throbbing pulse, and the tight-knit relationship with the breakbeat-heavy drumming leads to a slow, gradual ascent and an explosive ending.

For all their musical diversity, Sun Circus never sound incoherent, though. This is a band capable of drawing all kinds of music into their own orbit. The result is tight and polished, without feeling compromised, an impressive stunt to pull off.
