Leeds quartet English Teacher released their debut EP ‘Polyawkward’ earlier last month, which has been an outstanding success.
Enriched with alt-rock sensibilities, the upcoming northern powerhouses have shown they are a formidable force and their popularity continues to grow.
‘Polyawkward’ showcases the group’s limitless potential in full flow, as cathartic single ‘A55’ offers dramatic climaxes through lo-fi sounds and amplitudes to noise and attitude. Basslines tremble and guitar riffs fuzz throughout the record.
Followed up by exhilarating effort ‘Mental Maths’ the EP concluded with mammoth lead track ‘Good Grief’. The song’s punk attitude and chilling politically-charged, spoken-word lyrics and vocals from Lily Fontaine are on similar lines to that of fellow Leeds newcomers Yard Act.
Detailing their EP, enigmatic bandleader Lily Fontaine revealed: “‘Polyawkward’ is a journey of self-discovery around supermarkets, along pub crawls, through lockdowns, space, time, hooks and wonk.”
Newly confirmed to support US indie icons Yeah Yeah Yeahs on their UK tour this summer, English Teacher’s unstoppable rise shows no signs of easing anytime soon, with their own debut UK headline tour also well-under way.
Released through Nice Swan Records, the EP was produced by Theo Verney (TRAAMS, FEET, Lazarus Kane). English Teacher is Lily Fontaine (vocals, rhythm guitar, synth), Douglas Frost (drums, vocals), Nicholas Eden (bass), Lewis Whiting (lead guitar). Listen to the EP in full below.
