Now more confident and comfortable in the language of songwriting Lauran Hibberd shares her 12-song manual on making the perfect girlfriend in under an hour. It builds on her impressive debut album ‘Garageband Superstar’
Opening with the emotional single ‘i suck at grieving’ all about the loss of her dad. The song is a slow burn with Lauran’s delicate vocals and acoustic guitar before erupting into the full entourage of the band behind her. It’s a powerful portrait of grief and not knowing what to do with inheritance money.
Hitting home with nostalgic 00s pop, ‘2nd prettiest girl (in the world)’ shows Lauran in a more confident and comfortable setting. Based on a true story where a guy said she was the 2nd prettiest girl in the room on a date, the song enters new ground and expands on her already exceptional skillset. The likes of Avril Lavigne, Weezer and Green Day influenced the track.
‘Jealous’ follows suit as the acoustic-led track that pays homage to those nostalgic days. Aching pop-rock angst and sticky melodies compliment Lauran’s lyricism. ‘Mary’ and ‘90s Kid’ are arguably the best songs on Girlfriend Material as they encompass what the whole record is about – odes to teenage kicks and the usual heartbreak story.
Lauran Hibberd said: “Making this record came oddly naturally, it felt like it was supposed to come out of me and I’ve never felt so attached to a body of songs like this. I think I’m at a point in my life where I’ve started to really experience ‘life’, with going through losing a parent, having a life-altering break up, living on my own for the first time, and exploring who the ‘f*vk’ I actually am.
