JAWS @ Scala

JAWS

I’ve had numerous chances to catch JAWS at various venues across the country – and I’m angry that I didn’t earlier in my short time reviewing gigs.

For those who don’t know who JAWS are, they are an Indie Pop band hailing from Birmingham, who have (since 2012) been looking for their big break. Throughout the years, JAWS have been shifting their sound and growing as artists.

It was a classic sweaty night at Scala. The crowd as ruckus as ever and the sweet sound of every man, woman and child rapping JME before the bands came on the stage filled my mind with excitement. It was a fantastic turnout for all acts, including the first supporting act – Social Contract.

For a first impression, I really enjoyed the bands traditional rock vibes. Very modern indie rock with a nice little new age 70’s kinda groove going on. I wish I could tell you more about these guys, but I can’t seem to find them anywhere online. Social media hermits perhaps? Or maybe it’s all part of the gimmick?

Kagoule came out second. Again, Kagoule are one of those bands that I’ve never really paid attention too. I don’t have a reason for it, I’ve heard their name a thousand times and have even promoted a gig that they’ve played alongside JAWS – but never really had a listen. I’m definitely a fan after watching them live. I really enjoy the slow jam grunge vibes that they give off. The mix of male and female lead vocals are what make this band shine the most. It’s almost oxymoronic. They conflict harmonically but when brought together, they create such a rich sound. Loud. Grungy. Interesting. Kagoule are ones to watch this year.

JAWS are such a precious band. I genuinely couldn’t help myself but to sing along to practically every song. If I wasn’t joining in with the words, my head was nodding or my feet were tapping. I find them so infectiously pleasant. Plus, lad points to Connors beautiful voice and even better trousers. Chef pants all the way baby.

JAWS are easily/if not the best Indie band I’ve seen this year. Their larger than life attitude, stage presence and overall amazing songs really separate them as formidable artists this year. These guys need all the attention they can get – I truly believe this is their year.

The crowd was amazing as well. A big clap of hands to the kids that sang along to The Stone Roses ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ – A really special moment that I am sure I will take to the grave.
