Inky Nite deliver dark and dreamy alt pop laced anthems

Dark and dreamy alt pop duo Inky Nite show off their 80s laced anthems with the release of new single ‘The Canyon’.

Based in Brighton, this husband-wife duo are newcomers to the scene, and they are already making their mark.

Already well-known for their vintage sampling, shimmering basslines and poetic lyrics in their hometown underground music scene, Inky Nite are forever expanding their audience across the UK.

‘The Canyon’ follows up on 2020 singles ‘Bad Machines’ and ‘Spectres’ which both were supported by BBC Introducing and Radio 6’s Steve Lamacq. Their latest effort strikes the perfect balance between shadowy depths and scintillating energy, a twilight tune which is sure to resonate with listeners.

The nostalgic synths and drum samples are the backbone of the duo’s 80s influences as the elevating vocals nimbly navigate their way through an asteroid belt of fire-blazing political topics.

Speaking of their new release, Inky Nite revealed: “This is the last in the trilogy of singles we recorded in our seaside flat during the first pandemic lockdown.

“The song came together very quickly during that time, starting as a punchy little guitar chord progression and Flick’s choppy vocal melody, which then evolved into a peppy art-pop tune that we wanted to have a Martha and the Muffins ‘Echo Beach’ vibe.

“In contrast to the sugary hooks and New Wave nostalgia, the lyrics are about the canyon of division in the UK.

“We were reading the tug-of-war of opinions online and the words poured out in response, as we tried to make sense of how we arrived at this point.

“‘The Canyon’ spotlights everything from the rise of xenophobia and the relentless migrant-bashing of certain newspapers and politicians to online misinformation and social media echo chambers.”

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Angus & Julia Stone, The xx and Oh Wonder, their sonic backdrop is a cool cocktail shaker of other influences, like Metronomy, Santigold and Twin Shadow in equal measure.

Inky Nite juxtaposes deep, dark and dreamy lyrics with effervescent New Wave-inspired hooks, ‘The Canyon’ is another indication of their undeniable potential.
