It’s that time of the year again where we reflect on what we do best – Discovering great new music. And what better way to award those rising stars than with a prestigious awards from one of the best music blogs around! Check out our shortlist below of some of the greatest discoveries the year of 2017 has had to offer!
RAFFER
Ah Callum Rafferty. The Guildford boy himself. Described by ourselves as having “the chance to go make an explosion into the indie scene and we can’t wait to see when he does”; RAFFER has proven that although young, he’s ready to hang around with big boys. A personal highlight has got to be the release of his single ‘Street Light Dancing’, which instantly caught everyone’s attention and instantly made him a contender.
Ten Tonnes
Being tipped as one of the best new coming singer/songwriters of your generation is a heavy burden to bare. 21 year old Hertford bred Ten Tonnes has absolutely no issue with this. In 2017 we saw the release of his debut EP ‘Born To Lose’ which gave witness to the key album track that would give him the traction he needed to be highlighted and playlisted on both BBC Introducing and Spotify. Ten Tonnes is the gift that keeps on giving and he absolutely deserves to be on this list.
Sisteray
Loud, Political, Opinionated. Sisteray have shook the Indie Punk genre with a fat needle and thread. Having been hot picks by Both BBC Radio 1 & 6, Sisteray have very quickly become a cult favourite to many. Having released the single ‘White Knuckle Joy Ride’, it’s no wonder that with a certain revival in northern music is flourishing in the UK once more. Rock and Roll stars in the making.
No Hot Ashes
Stockport lads No Hot Ashes brandish a blend of synth melodies and never-fail indie-rock attitude that creates a sound which is pretty hard to get out of your head. We were introduced to the four piece at the start of the year when they took us back with their single ‘Bellyaches’. Young, lyrically driven and intense. No Hot Ashes have the recipe for cult indie success.
TRASH
TRASH have gifted 2017 with a gorgeous array of indie dance bangers. The self titled EP is a classic homage to classic indie dream pop which is what the world has been missing. Having been pushed by Phil Taggart on Radio 1 and massive supporting slots with Jaws, Rat Boy, Clean Cut Kid, Get Inuit on tour. TRASH are set to take on a tour in the new year and continue to be one of the most underrated bands this year has had to offer.
PALE WAVES
It wouldn’t be a discovery piece without one of the most talked about acts in 2017. PALE WAVES have almost been gifted fame thanks to the likes of Matt Healy from The 1975 and the immense coverage on BBC Radio 1. But lets not forget that these guys have worked hard to deserve the position they’re in. Thanks to the release of the dreamy ‘Television Romance’, Pale Waves have created an image. A texture. A trademark. They’re just moments away from blowing up.
Caro
Described as one of BBC’s One’s to Watch 2018. Caro are on their way to making 2018 as interesting as they are. Meticulously crafting all artwork and videos themselves as well as, writing, production and mixing duties, Caro are a truly unique prospect; a band creating their own fascinating world for their music to exist in.
CAVEPARTY
Tipped by our very selves as ‘an immensely satisfying discovery’; CAVEPARTY came out of absolutely nowhere and rattled our cages with single ‘No Lies’. The Liverpool lads fill the gap that The Black Keys left open like a shotgun would to the chest and cram it with there sensual blusey goodness. It pains me that their demos are this good and nobody is talking about them. Why is nobody talking about them!
Palm Honey
With the release of their EP ‘Tucked into the Electronic Wave’, Palm Honey took us by storm when we saw them at Flying. They are a perfect oxymoronic indie group with a serious sound and big vocals to match. Palm Honey have nailed the art of symphony and chaos, making them an absolute force to be reckoned with.
The Pale White
With two ICM Song Of The Week’s under their belts, The Pale White have a great 2018 ahead of them. Having supported Twin Atlantic and The Amazons the Newcastle trio are in great shape with their indie rock tunes and huge riffs gripping the nation. The Pale White have the capability to become big rock sensations, leather jackets, sunglasses and electric guitars the trio have nothing to hide, everyone should keep an eye out.
