Hazel Mei creates sweet melodic pop with dynamic jazz-infused soft rock

Who doesn’t love the sound of sweet melodic indie pop, cool jazz and soothing soft rock? You’ll love Australian artist Hazel Mei.

The Brisbane-based artist has just finished celebrating the success of her debut EP ‘Lost & Found’ and has been busy perfecting her latest single ‘The Funniest Thing’.

Hazel Mei, a.k.a Jessica Kirkham, wrote the song in April’s lockdown where her mind was able to unwind and let her thoughts run free. Hazel created the blossoming piece from the solitude of her home studio.

In celebration of how creativity can come at any time and in any space, she decided to produce and mix this track from home. You can hear the energy of home and spontaneity in the track.

‘The Funniest Thing’ is an uplifting, raw and honest number wrapped up in a beautiful arrangement of instrumentals and melancholy vocals.

Paralysed by politeness, the track is about Hazel’s inner narrative when encountering a misunderstanding or condescending conversation.

Speaking about the single, Hazel Mei said: “I wrote ‘The Funniest Thing’ during the last lockdown we had in Brisbane. Inspired by the spontaneity of the writing process, I decided to produce and mix this track myself from home. Whether it was the threat of another lockdown or my own excitement to finish it, the song came together very quickly and organically in this way.

“The song is about my usual reaction when encountering condescending conversation. In the face of these moments, I often find myself being polite and following convention instead of being assertive in my opinions.

“In the lyrics, I poke fun at my moments of timidness. All elements combine to create an uplifting piece that is thoughtful and relatable.”

Hazel Mei takes you out on a whim, as its dynamic composition sweeps you into the tapestry. Check her out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
