Franz Ferdinand @ O2 Academy Brixton

February 24th saw us take a trip to the ever warming Brixton Academy for a night of pure nostalgia. We were delighted to be invited to see Franz Ferdinand play to a sold Brixton in what could only be described as a shock to my system on all accounts.

If I shout Franz Ferdinand, you shout ‘Take me Out’. It’s as natural

as bread and butter. The fundamentals of Stone Island wearing, Strongbow Dark Fruits Twitter is essentially built off the back-bone of shouting the break to the infamous one hit wonder. Little to my surprise, I didn’t realise how infectious the bands presence where and how little of their music I actually knew.

Coming off the back of their newly released album ‘Always Ascending’, Franz Ferdinand have evolved their raucous indie rock days and grown into a pop twist, rhythm and funk rock band with clear inspiration from the likes of David Bowie and Talking Heads. It’s clear that the old chalkboard at the chateau has been thrown away and replaced with a high tech, whiteboard. Who knew that a more piano driven Franz Ferdinand with rhythmic bass and synth would be just what the Glaswegians needed to refresh their sound.

I’m not usually one to head bang at an indie rock gig. I leave my neck muscle gains to the likes of Metallica and QOTSA. However, the euphoric nature of hearing the breakdown to ‘Take me Out’ was a personally highlight. It was like hearing Mr Brightside in the club when you’re pissed – except I wasn’t inebriated and completely aware of my ridiculousness.
