Discover: Team Picture – Classic:M/Birthday Blues

Team Picture

Leeds based garage-psychers Team Picture conduct a special symphony of Noise and Fuzz.

Stumbling around on SoundCloud is like rambling around the ocean in search of sunken treasure you don’t know exists, or rather, doing the same thing in a large, rather dog-shitty park at night. However, occasionally you’re rewarded for your efforts and this time that reward comes in the form of a rather delicious Leeds-based 5 piece called Team Picture. If you’re like raw, picturesque fuzz and gale-force noise rock then Team Picture are a worthy investment of your time. Both (I presume) demo tracks on their SoundCloud are spaced-out yet boisterous, grimy nods to post-punk, garage rock and fuzz-psych.

Latest single ‘CLASSIC:M’ is a hazy balls-out cacophony of gloomy fuzz, Seeds-esq screechy moans and spring reverb vehemently splashed on the canvas like a Jackson Pollock painting. It’s got furious power, reminiscent of early White Stripes or melted-era Ty Segall, the drums steadily Meg White-pounding along then detonating into an atomic chorus.

In ‘Birthday Blues’ the band show off their noise rock/post-punk infusion. Sweeping reverbed feedback flies over Joy Division driving bass, steady drums and fuzzy guitar hooks. “Nobody wanna be friends with me” subtlety slides into the mix for maximum melancholy, said slowly and far away, possibly carried by gusts of wind from some Goth beach somewhere. Team Picture sound like a classic, messy thrift shop – Sonic Youth, The Jesus And Mary Chain and early Beach Boys are all there somewhere, poking their influential heads up in random places underneath the, slightly dusty blanket of contemporary psych-fuzz.

If dark, edgy garage rock is your thing then Team Picture have you covered. This band has far-out potential and I want to see more. Also, they’re probably awesome live.
