Tasters from Michael Nau’s forthcoming debut solo LP are dreamy, breazy walks in the park.
Maryland-based singer/songwriter Michael Nau (previously of Anti-Folkers Page France and Indie-Americana crossover Cotton Jones) demonstrates his dreamy, melodic brand of chill-out Psychedelia, Folk and Soul on two singles from his forthcoming debut solo LP ‘Mowing’.
The fresh- aired ‘Love Survives’ grooves like a Danger Mouse-produced Black keys record. Vintage drums clump along in the background with reverb soaked minimalist piano vamping, a clanging tremolo-ed surf guitar and soulful organ filler. Nau’s vocals are certainly handsome– raspy yet mellow, soulfully delivered but not croony. Nothing radical happens (the chorus delivers some lovely sugary backing vocals) but that’s to be forgiven; the groove is sweet and in the honeyed, dreamy soundscape of Nau’s music radical change would perhaps be unwelcome.
‘Maralou’ makes Nau’s Folk roots apparent with its sleepy, dream pop melody, harmony, and warm acoustic strumming. The toasty bass bobs away in the background surrounded by a plethora of atmospheric dreamy piano sounds and minimalist strings. Again though, nothing radical happens and there’s really no change to the melody/song structure yet the soundscape’s like a walk in some picturesque forest: it’s more or less the same scenery the whole way through but it’s delightful.
It’s chilled out, lazy strolling – there’s no bears or dangerous ravines around, Nau doesn’t want you to run or freak out, he wants you to enjoy the ride.
